Essential Information*

We provide important and practical information to navigate your new life in New Zealand (also known as ''Aotearoa'' in the Māori language meaning ''the land of the long white cloud''). From understanding local customs to finding the best services, explore our resources and make your transition as smooth as possible. All the relevant information in one spot to help you settle in. Check out the ''Practical Tips and Advice'' section at the bottom of each page.

New to New Zealand

New Zealanders (also known as "Kiwis'') are easy going and helpful. You do, however, need to understand and respect the way things work here. We are here to help.

Our Roads and Travel

Kiwi drivers are courteous and respect the rules of the road. This may be different to your own home country where driving may be a bit more "chaotic". One of the first important things to know about New Zealand is that road safety is important. Police patrol the roads and will pull you off when speeding or talking on your phone. We will provide a bit more information on travel and transport options in this section.

Banking, Finance and Tax

Moving countries is not cheap. Be prepared for many expenses including the set-up / settling in costs when you get to New Zealand. Finance may not be easy to obtain as a new arrival. You will need a bank account as soon as you get here. You can pay for most things with a bank card or an app on your mobile phone. Getting a bank account may take time and you will need to visit a bank branch to complete the process. IRD (Inland Revenue) manages tax and all new people wanting to work here need a tax number. The tax system is relatively easy. We provide more information in this section.

Accommodation

How do I find a place to live? We will provide some useful information on home rentals in this section.

Basic Services

You will need a SIM card, mobile data, Wi-Fi services and electricity. There are many good options to choose from. Let's tell you more here.
